Discard Negativity And Adopt A Positive Outlook On Life Before It’s Too Late

Positive Outlook On Life

If you’ve placed second in a writing contest, will you jump for joy and push for better results the next time or will you be discouraged and find an excuse not to join again? Life is filled with choices like that. You can choose be pessimistic and live a self-defeatist life or you can decide to be optimistic and live a challenging and fulfilling life.

Before you are too quick to decide, consider that optimism, a positive outlook, and good morale have been linked to academic, athletic, military, occupational and political success. In addition, optimism is a trait possessed by those with popularity, good health, freedom from the ill effects of trauma, and even long life.

On the other hand, there is a strong correlation between depression and pessimism. Depression affects people of all ages. In fact, the number of teenagers suffering from depression has reached an all-time high.

So what do optimists do that separates them different from pessimists?

Expect the best

The defining characteristic of pessimists is that they tend to believe bad events are inevitable and will keep reoccurring, undermining everything they do. In addition, they believe that the bad things that happen to them are their own fault even if they had little or no control over the events.

On the other hand, optimists, when confronted with the same bad turn of events, explain their misfortune as a temporary setback. Optimists view the causes of the bad event as confined to one particular occurrence. In addition, optimists tend to focus on the ‘problem’ at hand. Optimists also devise a plan to solve the problem. In addition, optimists use ‘positive reinterpretation.’ In other words, they look for the positive aspects of a negative experience and treat the experience as a way to help them learn and grow. Often optimists are unfazed by a bad situation because they perceive it as a challenge. Optimists actually expect the best from a bad situation. Moreover, optimists do not fall into the trap of fatalism. Optimists do not think “things will never get better,” or “If I failed once, it will happen again” or “If I experience misfortune in one part of my life, then it will happen in my whole life.”

Optimists also have positive expectations. People with positive expectancies react better during transitions to new environments, sudden tragedies and unlikely turns of events. Optimists adjust and recover quickly because they see such events as opportunities instead of obstacles.

People respond positively to optimists

Optimists are proactive and less dependent on others for their happiness. They find no need to control or manipulate people. People are drawn to optimists because their positive outlook is attractive. Their optimistic view of the world is contagious. A positive outlook has a positive influence on others. Moreover, optimism is a socially desirable trait in all communities. Those who are optimistic are much more widely accepted than those who spread doom, gloom, panic and hysteria. Optimists are more likely to: win elections; be voted most congenial and to be sought out for advice.

When the going gets tough, optimists get tougher

Optimists consider themselves to be in good health and remain positive even during times of stress. In contrast, pessimists are likely to react to stressful events by complaining of illness and psychological suffering. They may also deny that the stress exists or avoid dealing with problems. Pessimists are also more likely to quit trying when difficulties arise. However, optimists persevere. They don’t give up easily, they are also known for their patience. Optimists keep inching their way towards their goal or elusive dream.

Optimists are healthier and live longer

Medical research suggests that pursuit of life’s simple pleasures and a positive outlook can improve the body’s ability to fight disease. Generally, optimists experience good health. In addition, they usually age well. Moreover, on average optimists outlive people given to pessimistic thinking.
